2010. The Wolf Man : Semblants, Symptoms and Sinthomes

Saturdays 9.30am - 5.00pm

Venue: Australian Institute of International Affairs, Dyason House, 124 Jolimont Road, East Melbourne

Lacan’s later work moves from the general to the particular, from the linguistic account of symptoms to the specifics of a sinthome, from the generalized construction around the Name-of-the-Father to the specific manner in which each finds a solution in his or her sinthome. The true originality of Lacan’s contribution originated in the recognition that
the Other does not exist and that there is only a semblance of the Other in its stead. This discovery changed everything: whereas the Name-of-the-Father was originally designed to guarantee the Other’s existence, and whereas its foreclosure in psychosis would produce serious disturbances at the level of the Other, Lacan was henceforth led to the
recognition that the Name-of-the-Father is a lure. He then arrives at the thesis that there is no Other only its semblance, leading, as Miller has put it, to the conclusion that one can only make do without the Name-of-the-Father on condition that one makes use of it as semblant.
The study of semblants and sinthomes will be complemented by a close reading of Freud’s most ‘modern’ case, the Wolf Man, whose symptoms, with their non-classical and in some ways unclassifiable presentation, provides an opportunity to put some of Lacan’s later theory to the test.

Fundamental texts in psychoanalysis

Seminar of the Lacan Circle of Melbourne

Wednesdays 7pm - 8.30pm. 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month

This fortnightly seminar will meet Wednesday 24th February and then the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month for the rest of the year. We’ll continue our study of Jacques Lacan, Seminar V, Formations of the Unconscious, Le séminaire, livre V, Formations de l’inconscient, which we started last year. We work with both the English and French versions of the text.
This is the most significant of Lacan's early seminars and an excellent introduction to the key concepts of Lacanian psychoanalysis. The seminar is available in French from Amazon.fr and in English from Karnacbooks.com.
All welcome. Contribution to costs: $10. Full-time students: $5.
Following seminar: 10 March
If you have any queries, please contact the convener, Russell Grigg, rgrigg4@optusnet.com.au

Venue:
La Trobe University (City Campus) - 215 Franklin Street – Melbourne

July 28th At the next seminar there will be a discussion of Maurice Bouvet on obsessional neurosis, focusing on his paper, ‘Incidences thérapeutiques de la prise de conscience de l'envie de pénis dans la névrose obsessionnelle féminine’, which we hope to have in translation by the week-end. If you are attending the seminar and would like a copy, let me know or it is available on the website library.
We will also discuss, time permitting, the session of 21 May 1958. Ch. 23, ‘L’obsessionel et son désir’ in the French. We will continue the discussion of maternal “ravage” from last time as well as of Bouvet.
